This is an 18th century copy of a Chinese Famille Verte pattern. Although today it is known as the Bishop Sumner pattern, it would not have had a name in the 18th century. It is likely that a large service in this design was owned by Bishop Sumner in the 19th century and his name has been associated with the design ever since. Gold crescent mark. |
